Essex Police Infrastructure
Key Features
Etec was commissioned by Essex Police to deliver critical infrastructure upgrades as part of their initiative to install a future network of electric vehicle (EV) chargers across multiple operational police sites.
This project involved complex groundworks, including deep excavations, to lay the necessary electrical and data infrastructure.
The project was delivered across three operational sites: Dunmow Police Station, Chelmsford Police Station, and Rayleigh Police Station.
Given the nature of the police stations as live, emergency response environments, similar to WERC, careful planning and execution were required to ensure operational continuity while delivering the project safely and efficiently.
To minimise disturbance to police operations, works were carried out in phases, with clear communication and coordination with police station management at each stage.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges of this project was conducting deep excavation works in an operational emergency services setting.
Like other blue light facilities, police stations must remain fully operational 24/7, requiring Etec to implement strict protocols to minimise disruptions.
Access routes had to remain clear at all times to allow emergency vehicles to respond to incidents without delay.
Additionally, coordinating works in multiple live environments posed logistical and safety challenges.
Deep excavations for the installation of electrical infrastructure had to be carefully planned to avoid damaging existing underground utilities, while also ensuring that the operational integrity of the stations was not compromised.
At each site, maintaining safety for both the Essex Police staff and the construction team was a top priority.
