Moira Furnace Museum

Key Features

Etec were appointed to deliver essential remedial works at the historic Moira Furnace Museum, safeguarding the Scheduled Monument for future generations.

The project required a sensitive approach in line with heritage protection guidelines and close collaboration with Historic England. Works included repairing the building’s shell and envelope to achieve a fully wind and water-tight structure, addressing water ingress across the roof-level viewing platform, flue apertures, and canal bridge drainage.

Structural stabilisation measures included masonry repairs, repointing of internal and external walls, and remedial works to cracks within the furnace building, ensuring the long-term preservation of this nationally significant heritage asset.

Challenges and Solutions

The project was delivered in consultation with Historic England and other statutory consultees to ensure compliance with conservation requirements.

The presence of an active museum and country park required works to be carried out with minimal disruption to visitors and staff.

Specialist materials and techniques were used to match the original construction, preserving the historical authenticity of the structure.

Collaboration with heritage specialists and engineers was crucial to ensure the building remained structurally sound while maintaining its historical features.
