Mountbatten Leisure Centre
Key Features
The Mountbatten Leisure Centre project in Portsmouth involved the replacement of the existing woodwool roof deck and roof coverings, along with a comprehensive upgrade of all mechanical and electrical (M&E) services.
The project was divided into five sections, with work spanning across various parts of the building, including the sports hall and learner pool.
This complex project required extensive temporary works, including scaffolding and the erection of temporary roofs, to ensure that the facility remained operational throughout the construction period.
The temporary works ensured the safety of both workers and leisure centre users, while also maintaining the operational continuity of the facility.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the major challenges was ensuring that the leisure centre could remain open and operational during the extensive roof replacement works.
This required careful planning and phasing of the temporary works to minimise disruption.
The temporary roof over the sports hall, for instance, was crucial in protecting the interior from the elements, allowing activities within the centre to continue uninterrupted.
The scaffolding was also carefully designed to avoid interference with the centre’s operations, with phased adjustments made as work progressed from one section of the roof to another.
Innovations
We maintained effective communication with Portsmouth and the design team to implement design alterations as required.
Throughout the project we reviewed and increased security measures in conjunction with the client as necessary.
