St George’s Hospital
Key Features
Etec were appointed to deliver terrace refurbishment works to the Atkinson Morley Wing, ensuring it was fit and safe for use for hospital patients and staff.
The project includes the replacement of existing balustrading to meet modern safety standards, enabling the terraces to be used safely and comfortably. Container planting and outdoor furniture are being installed to create a calm, therapeutic environment.
All works are undertaken externally, with no entry into hospital premises to maintain infection control and patient safety. The scheme demands careful coordination due to restricted access, the close proximity of neighbouring major construction works, and the need to preserve clear emergency and public access routes.
Challenges and Solutions
Strategic planning is essential as the constraints of working within a live hospital site, with high footfall and emergency vehicle access, require meticulous logistical planning to avoid disruptions.
Stakeholder communication is crucial and regular engagement with hospital representatives, charity stakeholders, and site personnel ensures smooth project execution and compliance with hospital policies.
Adaptability is key and navigating the challenges of a busy healthcare setting requires flexibility, particularly in scheduling and resource allocation, to maintain seamless hospital operations.
