Key Features
- Etec delivered a scheme to repair and refurbish the listed Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hampstead
- The building was experiencing subsidence caused by nearby tree roots which had undermined the foundations
- This had also caused cracks to appear in the stonework
- The works involved piled underpinning of the foundations along with repointing stonework, internal decorations, removing and reinstating stained glass windows, and providing DDA adaptations
- This project posed several challenges involving the works, logistics, and health and safety
- When digging the piles it was discovered that there was an abandoned undercroft that did not appear on any of the drawings
- We consulted a structural engineer to review the undercroft to ensure our works did not pose a risk to the building
- The subsidence was primarily affecting the entrance and nave of the church meant it was necessary to create alternate access points
- We also had to maintain access to the church nursery at all times while making sure our works were fully segregated to maintain safety
- As this remained an active church we had to ensure that our works finished and a temporary floor was in place before sunset every Friday evening in order to allow for the SDA observation of the sabbath
- It was necessary to leave site during the May - June lockdown in 2020
- Extra security was arranged to ensure the site remained secure during this period with covid secure measures put in place when we returned
